August 2021

Like most of 2021, August is a busy month full of changes on Lakeshore. There are new happenings, such as new comedy shows, yoga classes and classes for kids. There is always fabulous shopping and new dishes to explore. However, with the ever-changing public health environment, businesses are going to great lengths to have excellent customer service and also keep their staff and customers healthy. Currently, Alameda County recommends everyone wear masks indoors in public places and many businesses have facemask requirements and are asking customers to respectfully comply. In community news, there is a Lakeshore Grand clean-up in August (back by popular demand) and the Grand Lake Farmers Market has a new long-term contract with the City of Oakland. Read all about it below!

Shakewell turns Seven!!!

July is Shakewell’s seven year anniversary!!!! Shakewell opened in July of 2014. FYI: In the restaurant industry, seven years is a known benchmark: 7/10 restaurants fail in first two years, and after they pass the seven-year mark, there’s a much higher rate of success!

Shakewell thanks their amazing customers, community and neighbors for supporting them which says that support is why they are still open today.

On that note, new July dishes at Shakewell:

* Brentwood corn, blistered peppers, scallions, basil, crème fraiche
* “Greek” salad, local tomatoes, cucumbers, romaine, niçoise olives, feta, oregano-red wine vinaigrette
* Bacon, lettuce & tomato sandwich, basil aioli, bun, potato chips

Shakewell has indoor and spacious outdoor seating if you want to dine in person.  Their food is also available for pickup and delivery.

Yearning for art, goods and products made in the Bay Area? Bay-Made opens again on 8/5. Stop by to stock up on Bay Area made goodies!

Urban Indigo always has a gift or card that hits the spot. Check out their summer inventory, jewelry, cards, knick-knacks and more.

Back to School! Find clothes and toys at Silver Moon Kids that will delight kids as they get ready for the next school year. Adventure Toys has games, books and toys galore that will put a smile before or after school activities.

If there is one thing Lakeshore Avenue has, it is food and drinks for every occasion! For an elegant night-out with excellent food and cocktails, make a reservation at Bardo Lounge and Supper Club.

Arizmendi has delicious pastries, soup and pizza that are good for breakfast, lunch or dinner (and a great community vibe too!)

An East Bay favorite, Colonial Donuts has a huge variety of donuts (including gluten-free) and is open 24 hours a day, yum!

Who can resist Lin Jia’s summer Cherry Galette? Lin-Jia makes incredible (mostly) Asian food and uses organic, sustainable, local ingredients when possible. They have dine out and take out services right now.

Rico Rico Taco is serving some of the best tacos, burritos and burrito bowls in the Bay Area. You can dine in, get takeout or delivery here.

For your next snack break, Quickly has bubble tea, noodles and general “finger food” snacks at 3306 Lakeshore Ave.

Steps to Stay Safe in Covid Times

With cases of COVID-19 rising locally and increased circulation of the highly transmissible Delta variant, Alameda County recommends that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks indoors in public places. Many Lakeshore businesses are instituting measures to keep their staff and customers as safe as possible. Some businesses have not stopped requiring staff and customers to wear facemasks, others are re-instituting facemask policies and some are requiring customers to have proof a vaccination. A sample of the new measures Lakeshore businesses are requiring now or in the near future:

The Cat House:

The Cathouse

For the safety of our staff and their families, our patrons, and the community. We will still be asking you to bring masks, too- let’s not get shut down again! FULLY vaccinated individuals only- 2 weeks after Johnson & Johnson shot or second Pfizer or Moderna shot! As qualified proof we will accept: your vaccination card, a photo of your vaccination card, or a screenshot of the ca.gov QR code. If you were vaccinated in the state of California you can retrieve your QR code by visiting covid19.ca.gov , scroll down and click on “vaccination records.” If you’re not vaccinated yet, please give it a shot!!

Shakewell:

Shakewell’s statement on 7/27 after the CDC released new guidance on facemasks:

Yesterday the CDC released new guidance encouraging vaccinated people to wear masks indoors again due to COVID-19’s Delta variant.  While Alameda County hasn’t imposed any new restrictions on restaurants yet, there’s a lot of talk and fear about what this means so we wanted to address what we’re doing to keep you safe. First off, our entire staff is fully vaccinated; in addition, all staff members are required to wear masks while working.  We are also continuing to follow the safety protocols issued by the CDC.
The safety of our staff & our customers is of utmost importance to us. We’re following the news closely to ensure we implement the most current safety recommendations.  If you have any questions about any of this don’t hesitate to reach out!

Arizmendi:

We believe we are obligated to protect our workers and their families and to provide a safe space for customers, so moving forward, we will now require masks for customers, workers, and vendors, regardless of vaccination status, to enter the store. We hope you understand as we are responding to the ongoing spike in cases and incidents of vaccinated workers contracting the virus in the service industry. Thank you for the continued support, stay safe, and see you soon!

Additionally, Bay-Made is requiring customers wear masks and practice social distancing. Adventure Toys requests that customers wear masks. Lin Jia asks that customers wear facemasks except when dining. Gymboree’s staff is all vaccinated and wear facemasks during class. Arise Yoga‘s staff is all vaccinated and requests all class participants to be vaccinated. There are many local businesses requiring staff and requesting customers to wear facemasks. Alameda County recommends that everyone wear masks indoors in public places, please respectfully wear a facemask for everyone’s safety when a business asks you to mask up!

On Saturday, July 24th, Nikki Fortunato Bas celebrated a new long-term agreement with the City of Oakland for the operation of the Grand Lake Farmers Market at Splash Pad Park. This achievement is the result of the tremendous work of the Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM) and a group of committed community stakeholders committed to producing a weekly farmers market for the mutual benefit of farmers, food makers, artisans, shoppers, eaters, visitors, and the broader Oakland community. With over 95 producers, (and priority given to Oakland-based businesses and producers of color) the Grand Lake Market is an award-winning weekly destination for community food access and education as part of a healthy, earth-friendly, equitable food system.
