January 2023

Lakeshore is ushering in 2023 with a lot to celebrate! There are new classes, cuisines, fashion, and more. Rico Rico Taco was featured on Check Please (and is expanding)! Proposition Chicken and Rico Rico Taco are partnering to give back to the community. Many merchants had a celebratory New Year and supported the Third Annual Lakeshore Stroll. Read all about it!

Welcome, 2023! New Year’s Eve was both celebratory and eventful on Lakeshore. We welcomed the new year with elegant dinners, delicious drinks, toasts to the new year, and overall giddiness at many businesses. However, it also was the day of the hardest rain, with an “atmospheric river” ushering us into 2023. Unfortunately, some businesses like The Cat House Bar and others were flooded and had to close early. All are businesses are re-opened, so if you missed your celebration due to the rain, there is still time to celebrate now!

Rico Rico Taco on Check Please!

Rico Rico Taco was featured on KQED’s Bay Area Check, Please! Oakland PR Executive Mary Richardson shared Rico Rico Taco, her favorite local gem, on Check Please! See Rico Rico Taco featured here with superb highlights and pictures this local gem we are lucky to have on Lakeshore.

Vegan Rico Rico Taco – Pic by Ken Katz

Rico Rico Taco is a blend of the families from the legendary Tacos El Gordo and
Tacos Sinaloa. The owners, Marisol and Ricardo, brought their favorite dishes to their new establishment, Rico Rico Taco, and the rest is history!

Featured dishes in Check Please were their Carnitas, Taco Al Pastor (fresh off the spit), and Hongo (mushroom taco).

At Rico Rico Taco, they believe that tacos and food just bring people together. Their saying is, “one taco a day is the key to joy.” They must be on to something because it looks like they are opening a vegan Rico Rico Taco at 677 Rand Ave (previously Holy land).

Community Kitchens: Rico Rico Taco

Rico Rico Taco is also a participant in Community Kitchens, helping to feed all Oaklanders. Community Kitchens offers a free, accessible meal program for Oakland’s most vulnerable community members with a mission is to feed people left behind by other food programs and to build community and solidarity through food. They have three pillars in our meal program, including our unhoused outreach, youth programs, and community-building events. Since they launched in 2020, Community Kitchens has provided over 200,000 community meals and $2 million in revenues to local restaurants. This year Community Kitchens expanded from being a free, accessible meal program into a food justice organization. Rico Rico Taco is part of Dining for Justice, where restaurants add a 1% surcharge, 100% of which goes toward providing community meals.

Non-Profit Monday: Proposition Chicken
