November 2021

A quick recap on a festive Halloween: Lakeshore businesses came through with Halloween spirit and treats! Though there was no parade this year due to public health reasons, there was plenty to enjoy on Lakeshore for everyone! Halloween previews and temptations all month long from the fantastic windows of Silver Moon Kids and Urban Indigo. Cana created a spookily fun patio before their Halloween Sunday Funday.

Cookies galore at Arizmendi with shortbread cookies of sugar skulls, pumpkins, ghosts, and Pan de Muerto. Bay-Made carries spooky Craft Chocolate, a woman-owned company based in Alameda.

Plenty of fun Halloween activities and stories at Adventure Toys. Need a Halloween costume? Silver Moon Kids has all kinds of Halloween Costumes for every trick-or-treater from lizards to superheroes.

Want Halloween events for adults? Cana had Halloween Sunday Funday with DJ’s and drinks (masks required). Later in the day and into the night, Heart and Dagger Saloon had their Halloween Bash!

We are looking forward to (hopefully) having the Lakeshore Halloween parade resume again next year!

Cozy Fall Ideas on Lakeshore

Fall is here and the holidays are around the corner! These past few weeks have seen unprecedented rain and chilly weather (though we are still in a severe drought). Lakeshore still has outdoor and indoor dining, takeout and curbside pickup for both restaurants and retail. However, as fall comes you may be thinking about holiday gifts, gift cards, or cozy activities.

As usual, Lakeshore has a plethora of places and activities to choose from. From cozy kids pajamas at Silver Moon Kids to scarves and hats at Urban Indigo to family books and activities at Adventure Toys to delectable meals and go-to cocktails from Bardo Lounge and Supper Club, Lakeshore has you covered! Almost all restaurants have delivery or takeout food (brunch from Shakewell or Lakeshore Cafe?). Looking for artistic inspiration? Bay-Made has local art decor and supplies if you want to try your hand at creating artistic creations. Want to exercise during the rain? Hipline and The Bar Method on Lakeshore are streaming classes.

The Cat House Five Year Anniversary!

A huge congratulations to The Cat House on their five-year anniversary!

The Cat House COVID GoFund Me for Staff

All businesses have had struggles during COVID but bars had an especially brutal time as they were one of the last businesses to re-open at all (outdoors included). The Cat House was resilient engaging with customers while they were closed, building up their patio, and doing their best to help their staff with their GoFundMe when they had to close.

Five years is a huge milestone for small business and two of The Cat House’s five years have been during Covid. A scary and uncertain time for most businesses, kudos to The Cat House for pulling through! The Cat House is back and was among the first businesses in Oakland to require proof of vaccination in order to make their business safe for customers and staff. Stop by The Cat House to congratulate them and get a drink (but don’t forget your proof of vaccine)!

New & Familiar Faces and Behind the Scenes

Ben Dimond

Meet Ben Dimond, Bardo Bar and Supper Club Bar Manager.

A peak at Ben’s approach and craftsmanship: “Sometimes making a cocktail is very intentional. There is a specific place or feeling that you’re trying to evoke — those are some of the coolest drinks I’ve made. But my favorite creations are the happy accidents that come from an interaction with a guest. While we strive to create an intentional and evocative cocktail menu, we all enjoy a culture and atmosphere where guests are comfortable asking questions and ordering off-menu. When guests trust us to make them something entirely new – this is the best part of bartending.” – Bardo Bar and Supper Club.

Meet Urban Indigo owner Cynthia Bragdon and staff getting into the holiday spirit! Meet Shakewell co-owner Tim Nugent, it is wonderful to see business owners support each other (Urban Indigo and Shakewell!)

The magic behind the pizza and baked goods at Arizmendi! We know the food is fresh and delicious but how do they make so much by 7:00 am? This is what happens when Arizmendi is closed, they are getting everything ready for the amazing food for their loyal customers the following week – YUM!
