Summer on Lakeshore

It is summer on Lakeshore and Lake Park Avenues! Our businesses are working amazingly hard to serve the community and make it through this very challenging time. In unprecedented times, Lakeshore businesses need unprecedented support (as much as we can muster) to make it through these times as a community. Below you will find fun and creative ways to win prizes by supporting local businesses, tips on local shopping and brunch, stories on how local support has made it possible for businesses to give back even more and the Re-Dedication of the Black Lives Matter Memorial on Lakeshore Ave. and Mandana Blvd. Read all about it!

Summer Lakeshore Love is a campaign to lift our spirits and support beloved local businesses during this challenging time. This Buy Lakeshore campaign is a win-win for the merchants and the community. You can enter the drawing to win one of 30 Lakeshore prizes by supporting three or more Lakeshore businesses. Even better, you can enter the drawing for one of the grand prizes ($100 worth of local gift certificates) just by supporting six Lakeshore businesses. Remember, every business on Lakeshore counts as part of your entry! Congratulations to our June Lakeshore Love Grand Prize winners Paul Yee and Bobby Brenman!

The June Lakeshore Love campaign was a success and Summer Lakeshore Love (August 15 – September 30, 2020) has even more ways to join:

1. Download the Follow the Lights to Lakeshore coloring page above and have family (or solo) fun coloring it. Take a picture of it with the artist that colored it, put it on Facebook or Instagram with #lakeshoreloveoakland.
Alternatively, you can ask a business to put it in their window and take a picture of it there and put it on Facebook or Instagram with #lakeshoreloveoakland! Note: Please see the details on Summer Lakeshore Love for valid submission rules.

2. Did you buy something from Lakeshore or Lake Park Ave (or have it delivered?) If you did, take a picture of your purchase, name the merchant, and #lakeshoreloveoakland. Note: Please see the details on Summer Lakeshore Love for valid submission rules.

Each of these counts as one “receipt” for an entry, which makes your entry even easier. Summer Lakeshore Love is August 5 – September 30, 2020. For more details on how to enter (and download the coloring page) please see the webpage.

Giving Back

Every Monday in July, Proposition Chicken donated 10% of pick-up sales (both walk-ins and advanced orders) to AIMS K-12 in Oakland. After the shelter-in-place orders were issued in March, Proposition Chicken had to pause their donation program in order to focus on the huge changes in operations and sales. They are so grateful that the community has supported them through this very difficult time and that they can give back again!

Since Proposition Chicken opened in 2013, it has donated nearly $55,000 to more than 60 local non-profits in Oakland and San Francisco. They say that they can’t thank these organizations and the individuals behind them enough “for their selfless devotion to changing lives in our community”.

Arizmendi’s July and August donation jar recipient is the Black Solidarity Fund. The Black Solidarity Fund was “founded in response to calls for help from Black owners of small businesses. They have launched a support fund to assist with coronavirus impacts and storefront repairs”. Learn more on their website.

Shakewell Turns Six

Shakewell celebrated its six-year anniversary and we wish it the happiest of birthdays! It has been a hard year and, like all small business owners, Tim Nugent, Jen Biesty and Shakewell have been working diligently with grueling schedules. Wish them a happy anniversary when you order brunch, lunch, dinner, or cocktails to-go!

Black Lives Matter

On July 16th, Lakeshore BID and Councilmember Nikki Fortunato Bas organized a Re-Dedication Gathering at the Black Lives Matter Memorial on Lakeshore Ave. and Mandana Blvd. The gathering was in response to the vandalism of the Black Lives Matter Memorial. We do not know the intention of the person who vandalized it, eye-witness accounts said it was by someone that appeared to be mentally ill. We do know why the Memorial is so important to our neighborhood and community. It is because, as Lakeshore Baptist Church Pastor Jim Hopkins says, “Ours is a city that not only talks about welcoming all but aspires to live that welcome. Ours is a neighborhood that not only hosts memorials to justice but actively seeks justice for all. Ours is a town that not only calls for an honest telling of history but engages in such a telling.” Please read more about the Re-Dedication Gathering on Splashpad News.
