Lakeshore Buzz: August Moments & What’s Next
August has been a busy and exciting month for the Lakeshore Avenue Business Improvement District (LABID). From important city updates to community safety events and new business openings, there is plenty happening in our district that we are thrilled to share with you.
Dumpster Update: City Ordinance & Business Permits

Back in June, the LABID was informed that the City of Oakland would be cracking down on businesses not in compliance with garbage disposal regulations. Letters were sent to businesses warning that dumpsters placed on city streets would need to be removed within 30 days or fines would be issued.
However, on Monday, August 19, Councilmember Wang’s District 2 office notified the BID that further investigation revealed a complication: some businesses had actually been issued permits in the past allowing them to maintain dumpsters on the street. The city is now working on how to address and potentially roll back these permits to align with the ordinance.
In the meantime, Councilmember Wang has asked all Lakeshore businesses to review their waste management practices and consider alternative arrangements, such as downsizing bins or relocating them off the street where possible. While the process is ongoing, LABID will continue advocating for solutions that balance the needs of our businesses with the cleanliness and safety of our shared neighborhood.
Community Safety Event: Coffee with a Cop
On Thursday, August 21, the GAP hosted a Community Safety Event – Coffee with a Cop, and we are happy to report it was a resounding success.
Neighbors gathered to share their thoughts on local concerns such as safety, street cleanliness, and the ongoing challenges surrounding unhoused populations in Oakland. The event brought together five area officers, including one of our walking officers, Sgt. Ladd, and our acting area Captain, Lt. Leite.
The atmosphere was open, positive, and solution-focused. Attendees expressed appreciation for the opportunity to connect directly with OPD officers in a casual setting, and many shared that they would like to see these types of events held more regularly. LABID echoes this sentiment and will work to encourage more opportunities for face-to-face dialogue between our community and law enforcement.

Welcome to Lakeshore: Obelisco Restaurant
We’re excited to announce the arrival of Obelisco, Lakeshore’s newest restaurant, which officially opens with a soft launch on August 30–31.
Located at 3407 Lakeshore Avenue (formerly The Well), Obelisco will feature authentic Mexican cuisine in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Early glimpses suggest an inviting and vibrant dining experience that will be a welcome addition to our community.
You may also have noticed a change in the front of the restaurant: the parklet previously used for outdoor seating has been removed, freeing up parking spaces for customers and making the area more accessible. We encourage everyone to stop by and support this exciting new business on Lakeshore!
