September on Lakeshore: Community Wins, Cleaner Streets, and Upcoming Festivities

As we close out September, we’re reflecting on the progress made along Lakeshore Avenue this month—and looking ahead to some exciting events coming your way in October and November.

Trash Bin & Dumpster Compliance Update

Earlier this month, BID staff met with representatives from Councilmember Charlene Wang’s office, 311, Waste Management, and city staff to continue pushing forward on dumpster compliance. Thanks to last month’s compliance letter, several businesses are now preparing to switch from large dumpsters to push carts—an important step toward a cleaner, more welcoming avenue.

A special thank you to our community—you truly were the squeaky wheel that greased the wheels to get the city to take action on this ongoing dumpster issue. Your voices were heard loud and clear, and because of your persistence, the street is starting to look amazing—and dumpster free!

We also want to extend a huge thank you to our partners in this action—Charlene, Sandra, and Warren. In just six months, you’ve helped accomplish what was said to be impossible for the past five years. Both the BID and the neighbors are beyond grateful for your dedication and results.

We know these changes have required businesses to adjust how they receive garbage service, and we appreciate their cooperation. Our hope is that a cleaner avenue and open parking spaces, free of dumpsters and debris, will bring more shoppers to Lakeshore—and with that, more revenue for our businesses. Keeping Lakeshore clean remains one of our top priorities.

Our next focus will be on businesses further down Lakeshore whose garbage bins are still being placed in the public right-of-way. A new compliance letter will be issued soon to ensure everyone is aligned with city regulations.

Progress is being made, and we’ll continue to keep the community updated as this effort moves forward.

September Community Clean-Up Success

On September 21, 37 amazing volunteers from the Lakeshore and Grand Avenue community came together for a major clean-up—and it was a huge success! Together, they collected over 20 bags of trash, removed graffiti and tags from poles, meters, and bins, and even tackled some much-needed gardening work.

We’re deeply grateful to our partners—Grand Lake Business Association, Grand Lake Neighbors, the LGBTQ+ Center, Mayor Barbara Lee’s office, and Councilmember Charlene Wang (who rolled up her sleeves and joined in herself!).

This event truly highlighted the spirit and strength of our community, and we’re excited to keep that momentum going with clean-ups planned quarterly moving forward.

BID Updates from September

  • Water Behind the Trader Joe’s Parking Structure: What appeared to be a leak turned out to be condensation drainage from Trader Joe’s temporary cooler while their in-store refrigerator is under repair. This is only a short-term issue.
  • Big-Belly Trash Cans: The avenue’s large trash cans are worn down and will be replaced or repaired, with the possibility of adding another by the end of the year.
  • Street Sweeping Challenges: The west side of Lakeshore is missing regular sweeping due to overnight parking violations. We encourage residents and business owners to make 311 requests so the city can address this. Since stormwater drains into a creek, we can’t powerwash the avenue—so every bit of city support matters.
