Keeping Our Community Safe This Juneteenth Holiday
The Juneteenth holiday is just around the corner on Friday, June 19th, and we are anticipating large, vibrant crowds gathering to celebrate around beautiful Lake Merritt.
To ensure a welcoming, safe environment for all visitors and to guarantee that emergency vehicles and public transit can move quickly if needed, the City of Oakland will be implementing temporary street closures and parking restrictions around the Lake.
If you are planning to visit the Lakeshore District, dine, or shop this Friday, please review the travel impacts below. We highly encourage everyone who is able to walk, bike, or use public transit (BART, AC Transit) to access the area!
Friday, June 19: Road Closures & Parking Restrictions
Active Hours: 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM
Lakeshore Avenue will be completely closed to vehicle traffic between MacArthur Blvd and East 18th St. No street parking will be permitted.
Side Street Impact: The following streets will be closed at Lakeshore Ave: Beacon St, Boden Way, Brooklyn Ave, Wayne Ave, Hanover Ave, and the Lakeshore Ave cul-de-sac.
El Embarcadero will be fully closed.
Grand Avenue will be closed between MacArthur Blvd and Euclid Ave.
What is allowed?
Pedestrians and bicycles are fully welcome! Traffic barriers will allow easy foot and bike access to the Lake (no perimeter fencing is being put up).
Local residents living on the affected streets, emergency vehicles, and AC Transit/Paratransit buses will be granted vehicle access through the checkpoints.
👉 Bonus Parking Tip: Juneteenth is a parking meter holiday! The Lake Park Parking Lot under the I-580 freeway (about 150 spaces) will remain open and accessible.
Upcoming Maintenance: 3250 Lakeshore Ave Garage Closure
Looking ahead to later this month, the City of Oakland will be performing necessary asphalt and concrete pillar repairs at our parking facility located at 3250 Lakeshore Avenue.
To get this work done safely and quickly, a full garage closure will be required on construction days.
The Repair Schedule:
Saturday, June 27: Garage closed for asphalt saw-cutting and breakout.
Monday, June 29: Garage closed for asphalt restoration and concrete pillar repairs.
Tuesday, June 30: Garage closed (reserved as a buffer day to finalize repairs, if needed).
Daily Work Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
What this means for parking: While the indoor parking garage will be entirely closed on these days, the outdoor parking lot will remain FULLY accessible throughout the project!
Please note that construction equipment will be staged on Wesley Way, and “No Parking” signs will be posted in that area 3 days prior to the start of work.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we celebrate our community safely and work to keep our neighborhood infrastructure in top shape! We look forward to seeing you on the Avenue.
