Giving Back

TRUE

True

True gave a portion of their proceeds from their AJ1 Rebellionaires to support the Hidden Genius Project in their mission to train and mentor Black youth in technology creation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills to transform their lives and their communities.

Starbucks

Starbucks is committed to building inclusive, accessible stores where all feel welcome. So, in 2021, they introduced Aira—a service that connects people who are blind or have low-vision with professional visual interpreters through an app—and released updated Braille and large print menus in all U.S. stores. But we aren’t stopping there.

Starbucks

Now, they are currently testing innovative new technologies, including speech-to-text capabilities and visual order readiness notifications. Their goal is to meet a bolder set of accessibility standards by 2030, creating stronger, more inclusive communities.

Proposition Chicken

Every Monday Proposition Chicken donates 10% of all dine-in sales to a local non-profit partner each month.

March’s Non-profit Oakland partner was Youth Alive whose mission is to prevent violence and create young leaders. Their staff is comprised of men and women who grew up in the communities they serve. Some are former victims, some former gang members. All are highly trained in the best practices of their profession. They bring not judgment, but only understanding, knowledge, and a path to greater peace for traumatized individuals and the city.

Youth Alive is here to help prevent conflicts from happening on the streets and mediate between family members in homes. They are available to intervene and support children in school with mentorship and counseling, and we are also available to prevent violence from happening in schools. They also show up to help when violence happens and support families in healing in the aftermath.

Family Paths

Apri’s Non-Profit partner is Family Paths which is a non-profit organization of mental health professionals and dedicated volunteers that provides a number of mental health and supportive services to low-income, multi-stressed individuals and families. Family Paths is a multicultural agency committed to serving families of Alameda County regardless of age, ethnicity/race, financial status, language, sexual orientation, immigration status, class, religion, gender, and mental or physical ability.

Behind the Scences

How do businesses become who they are? There is a lot that happened behind the scenes. Shakewell and Bardo have treated us to some sneak peeks behind what has made their businesses what they are today.

Shakewell:

Meet Chef de Cuisine Holly Deck! She’s been with Shakewell since they opened eight years ago. She puts her heart and soul into everything she does and holds up Shakewell’s ethos. Shakewell owners say they couldn’t do without her.

Meet Chef Zule! Zule joined us shortly after Shakewell opened. She works incredibly hard and is dedicated to the Shakewell brand and standard. They think her right arm is probably a lot stronger because of all the churro batter she’s made!

Next time you eat at Shakewell, think of these two strong women behind the scenes making their chef scene work!

Bardo:

Ever wonder about the inspiration for Bardo’s design?

Seth’s story about the backbar design is that it was inspired by the wet-bar with gold vein mirrors in his parent’s 1960’s den. Over time, that bar became emblematic of the warmth that happened when his folks home entertained, a symbol of great parties and close friends. Bardo wanted our bar to express the same feeling of celebration, richness and revelry.

Bardo

Since Bardo’s space is mostly rectangular, curved lines and textured surfaces were important. The design included three sections with arch supports and staggered brass shelving on a large gold veined mirror. Geometric-styled wallpaper and speaker-cloth panels framed the center section. The speaker touch was a nod to his Dad’s hi-fi system and beloved ‘Rectilinear’ speakers. Their build team executed the project with care and meticulousness. The mirror required precision fabrication to hide the shelf mounts and maintain its reflective continuity. The build was taking shape and things seemed to be going according to plan. But as the structure neared completion, they realized something was off (!).

There was no flow. So they asked the team to execute elliptical shape cuts which they hoped would introduce more space. They referenced one of their favorite MCM cocktail glasses and our front door glass cutout. Now, they knew once the cuts were made, there was no going back – it had to be right. So, with some trepidation, they final measurements were confirmed and the cuts were made. And Voilà! The ‘flow’ was now in full effect and Bardo’s backbar sprang to life for you to enjoy today!

Odds and Ends

The Vegan Mob is moving from 500 Lake Park Ave to 1500 Broadway in July. Full story here.

The Cannabis Dispensary is planning to open in the old CVS, 3236 Lakeshore Ave, the week of April 18th. The new team has been cleaning up the building and area before they open.

  1. Unfortunately that nicely done Easter Parade sign doesn’t jibe with the 2022 calendar. I’m guessing they meant Saturday, April 16?

As always, thank you for the newsletter. What a treat.
